DESCRIPTION:Place Yourself in History An America 250 Experience hosted by WPAA-TV and Community Media Center\nPresidents’ Day Workshop\nMeet our Arts in Advocacy residents and explore how Democracy is a Creative Practice. Place Yourself in History is an immersive\, improvisation experience using digital media for discovery. \nWith greenscreen and a few creative ideas you can be placed back in time. In this workshop we will use ‘We Are The World’ (1985 video/music) and 911 (2001) images to explore how communities experience and respond to disruption one person at a time\, until it becomes people together. \nCookies courtesy of @thetastysprinkle\nWorkshop funded by Ulbrich Foundation. \nWe love heart\, culture and cookies\n  \nReimagine a photo or video\nOpen to people of all ages. With technology we can collectively and creatively reflect on how history shapes our understanding of ourselves\, our neighbors\, and our democracy.  This project begins Presidents’ Day 2025 and culminated July 4\,2026 \nThe reasons may vary\, but the stories will be told if you decide to tell them. We are here to help. WPAA-TV Team \nEvery one can take ownership of history for personal connection\, resistance\, or as part of the creative practice within a community.  With today’s technology\, you can take a photo or video and put yourself into images from your perspective: journalists\, fan\, ally\, representative of resistance or government. Your point-of-view belongs to you. We merely help you explore new ways to connect with history. \nLet’s erase ‘fake’ and replace it with ‘reflection’. If you have a video\, we may not be ready to insert you on Presidents’ day. We will work with you to determine how it can be done. We have time. In Wallingford\, our greenscreen fun holiday greetings tradition started in 2005. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWPAA-TV is Wallingford’s volunteer-run award-winning community TV station with a youth-led TeenTigerTV program for media makers (15 to 25). Most participants are socially or economically disadvantaged. \nOur Pledge:\nTo provide a brave\, safe\, creative space for a diversity of expression within our community and beyond.More.Than.TV \nMore.Than.TV: A Community Access TV Station with community space for meetings\, theater\, art exhibits\, and special programs and internships of various kinds. \nOur volunteers are dedicated to supporting social action art\, digital media & civic literacy projects in the public interest. \nFreeman Penny Quinn\, 1st Free Speech ambassador\, a blue penquin\, is our mascot. Hercules\, a transformational tiger embodied as public art in a mural on our building is our inspiration.

DESCRIPTION:Award-winning since 2014. Our Summer TeenTigerTV 2024 is all about U. We encourage young people (ages 15-21) interested in media production or advocacy to inquire through the website\, or just show up. \n#TeenTigerTV is free\, flexible\, and tailored to participants’ interests media skills development program. Our annual six-week summer program begins July 15th. If life allows\, the best option for the full experience is to show up on July 15th at 10 am. \nSummers are full of other things like family vacations so we are flexible. You can still join in any Mon-Wed between 10 -4 on or after July 15th. \nWho can come: We offer training and support for all high school-age youth in Wallingford. Youth from neighboring communities can participate\, if we are not a capacity. So if interested inquire. It may work out. Sometimes we feed you. \nTeams explore a variety of media formats related to graphics\, storytelling\, TV\, and film. These skills will prepare you to enter video festivals. We encourage our participants to enter the C-SPAN competition studentcam.org. \nIf you applied to Workforce Alliance Summer Employment through Wallingford Youth & Social Service we are a host site. SUMMARY:Nelson 'Carty' Ford Memorial Art Gallery Dedication #SocialActionArt
DESCRIPTION:On April 30th\, family\, ARTivists\, and community leaders will gather to honor artist\, Nelson Ford. The WPAA-TV and Community Media Center #socialactionart Gallery dedication will be at 6 pm. The  Nelson ‘Carty’ Ford Memorial Gallery is an integrated gallery in the gathering spaces and walkways of WPAA-TV and Community Media Center. \nNelson served on the WPAA-TV Board of Directors from 2015-17. Subsequently\, he served as the arts ambassador. A few pieces from his fine art series\, Bricks in Search of Words\, remain on loan\, said Artistic Director Josiah Houston. “He influenced the media centers’ use of public art to solve problems. The organization’s journey into #MoreThanTV began as a #PowerfulWildFree4Arts project to resolve a blight problem. After a nor’easter in 2013\, the north side of WPAA-TV’s renovated 1924 cow barn was visible and ‘ugly’. In 2015\, transforming ugly into a tiger mural was a literal stretch for Ryan Christenson. ARCY is now an internationally renowned large-scale muralist\, and the tiger is known as ‘Hercules’. \nNelson supported the permanent installation of #StreetshotZ by photographer Charles Buzinsky. This remains the featured installation. It includes photographs\, a book\, and a digital photo display. It is designed to elicit support for programs helping housing and food-insecure neighbors. \n#SocialActionArt by ARTivists is ‘justice’ work. It gives voice to the silenced\, or marginalized\, to better understand our collective humanity and the earth we share. Its public presence provides an opportunity for conversation and compassionate change. Few artists claim this space beyond the protest signs and posters. For them and their work\, we offer our brave\, safe creative space in Nelson’s honor. \nFlipped from the 1960s Civil Rights headlines\, the “We Are Not Like You” series by Brother Iyaba Ibo Mandingo\, provokes necessary discussion of our shared ‘differently’ history. Source materials are to be part of the installation. The evocative vessels and shadow boxes by  Susan Clinard are timeless. \nThe sculpture ‘Conversation‘ by Ann Lehman\, ‘Mission in Mosaic‘ by Gallery53 artists\, and Wally political cartoons by Kevin Markowski are in the collection. Musicians may appreciate the reflective take on Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” Album Cover on loan from photographer and music man Robert Sims and the reclaimed music swag by Tim Sway of New Perspective Music. Tim designed the gallery dedication sign with reclaimed barn wood. Upcycled art speaks to care for our planet. Pieces are integrated throughout the space: Upcycled Mobiles to Karen J Wassmer‘s Dragonfly\, Sun and Seasons.  Jahmal Henderson’s Legacy of a Black Man Series & Fannie Lou Hamer You Can Pray \nMore about Carty: A 1963 graduate of Paier Art School he held day jobs as a graphic designer and pursued fine arts and his interest in history. His fine art was exhibited from 1991 until his passing. He began his major work The Awakening in a scroll 2 ft. by more than 500 ft. It explored the evolution of ‘One Race with many faces\, colors\, cultures\, and nations’.
