We believe it is important to understand Moses Yale Beach in his own time. Volunteers are assisting in the development of this timeline and related stories. One story is The Pivotal Penny: Era of the Penny Press. The 3-part timeline covers major events in the U.S.A., CT, and his lifetime, 1800 to 1868. Mr. Beach lived in Antebellum (before the war) America. In Connecticut, there was a transformation from Farm & Sail to Industry & Rail, shifting to a manufacturing economy. Across the nation, there were other economic booms. In the South, rice, then cotton, tobacco, and indigo each enabled by slavery. And the westward expansion was a mix of land grants and grabs. Here is our youth program’s award-winning depiction of ‘Manifest Destiny’: Framing Words. Religion also had a renaissance: Mormons (1823), Protestants cracking Catholic dominance in the South (1859) and the opening of Colleges (Wesleyan, CT). Realism took hold in the art world: religious, moral, or social messages in paintings and novels.
